LLuxe City Guide Overview

The City of Montreal:

The picturesque city of Montreal is known as one of the liveliest cities in North America. The majority of its residents speak French, and it is the second largest French-speaking city in the world. The city proper has over 1.6 million residents and more than 3.6 million in the greater metropolitan area. Montreal has become known for hosting international conventions and is called Canada’s cultural capital. Rich in history, there is no denying the charm of this urban metropolis, embracing both the old and new. Named after a near-by peak, Mont Royal, Montreal began as an island inhabited by the St. Lawrence Iroquoians. Old Montreal has the flavor of a European city with its sidewalk cafes and abundant flowerboxes in the summer. Shop, dine, dance, admire;whatever your reason for coming here, it won’t be your only visit.

Montreal’s Highlights:

  • Mont-Royal Park:A breathtakingly beautiful park situated on a “mountain” that offers many activities, from horseback riding in the summer to skiing in the winter.

  • Old Port: You cannot visit Montreal and not walk the 2.5 km stretch of riverfront along the St. Lawrence River. Cruise boats can take you around the waterways of the port.

  • Place Jacques-Cartier: Used as a market place in the past, it is now the city’s main entertainment site and people from all over come to gather here.

  • Montreal International Jazz Festival: The world’s biggest jazz festival is held in Montreal annually during June and July.

  • Just for Laughs Festival: During July, visitors come and exercise their stomach muscles with this outstanding comedy event, the largest of its kind in the world.

  • Formula One: Ardent fans of Formula One racing in Montreal are proud to host one of the most prestigious Grand Prix Races in the world.

Le Saint Sulpice Hotel (Hotels)

A few years ago we’d have never believed that Vieux Montréal would be the epicenter of an outbreak of chic and modern boutique hotels, but for whatever reason, that’s what’s come to pass; within the historic district of the walled old city, one finds some of the most inspiring small hotels in North America.   ...

Hotel Nelligan (Hotels)

The Hotel Nelligan is named for Émile Nelligan, one of Quebec’s most celebrated poets, and his face and quotations adorn the interiors of the hotel. It’s a detail that stops well short of outright gimmickry, but it contributes to the sense of history that is thick in the halls of this 1850 building.   It’s a ...

Le Place D'Armes Hotel & Suites (Hotels)

Hotel Place d’Armes is a new addition to the historic district of Old Montréal, a modern boutique hotel within the renovated nineteenth-century Great Scottish Life Insurance building, and an ideal vantage point from which to witness the resurgence of this once-neglected neighborhood.   Old Montréal was, quite obv ...

Hotel Gault (Hotels)

In the historic quarter of Vieux Montréal, behind the 18th-century stone facade of a former carpet factory, you’ll find one of the most modern hotels in North America. Hotel Gault has no time for the French country style of many of its neighbors—the look here is industrial contemporary, with open-plan loft-style rooms, floors ...

Opus Hotel Montreal (Hotels)

Fans of contemporary-design boutique hotels are already spoiled for choice in Montreal, but most often they’re confined to the scenic-but-sleepy old quarter. The Opus Montreal, by contrast, stands at the top of St. Laurent, what’s essentially the city’s main drag; maybe not where you’d stand to take a postcard photo, but ...

Le St James Hotel (Hotels)

Montréal has recently seen a bumper crop of new boutique hotels—few, though, are as self-consciously opulent and relentlessly upscale as Hotel Le St-James. The building is, like so many in Old Montréal, a nineteenth-century landmark, a Second Empire bank building dating to 1870, an imposing and stately structure, very much at ...

Auberge Du Vieux Port (Hotels)

Old Montréal is like a city within a city, a slice of Old Europe right in the middle of a major North American city, where one can still hear the hooves of horses, drawing carriages along the meandering cobbled streets. And the Auberge du Vieux-Port is a bit of a trip through time as well—though nominally a boutique, and younger tha ...
