Hamburg is unlike any other German city. Germany’s biggest port, its multiculturalism and vitality emerge from its strong maritime history. With its own stock exchange, banking system and navy (which has been in place since the end of the 16th century) this city seems to always be one step ahead. The wealthiest city in Germany, it also boasts an extensively-designed transit system.
Hamburg Highlights:
Miniatur Wonderland:This museum has the largest model train exhibition in the world. 11,000 meters of track take miniature trains and people through Southern Germany, Hamburg and the coast, America, Scandinavia and Switzerland. The painstaking effort which has been put into creating the model details is obvious and the whole thing is truly impressive. It’s worth the visit.
Church of Saint Michael (Michaeliskirche):Rebuilt after being bombed in the World War, this 18th century cathedral is Hamburg’s best-known architectural landmark. With an elevator that goes to the top, it is a fantastic place to take in the view below.
Altona Fish Market:A wonderful place for seafood lovers! Take part in auctions, trading, buying, selling or just browse the fresh fish Altona has to offer. The market is one of the fastest-developing and most picturesque areas in the city.
Museum of Hamburg History:Indulge in the history of Hamburg with exhibits from the 8th to the 20th century.
Deichtorhallen: In the halls of this converted market visitors will be able to enjoy international touring contemporary art exhibitions. Here you’ll see work from artists such as Warhol, Lichtenstein, Haring and photography from Helmut Newton and Annie Leibowitz, to name a few.
Davidwache: Covered in ornate ceramic tiles, this brick building is the base for 150 police officers. Davidwache is located in the St. Pauli neighbourhood, known as the safest in Hamburg.
On the banks of the Elbe river, to the west of the Hamburg city center, is an old-world throwback to the Hanseatic days: the two-hundred-year-old Hotel Louis C. Jacob. It’s named for a French gardener, and after one look at the meticulous landscaping that surrounds this opulent mansion of a hotel, you’ll understand why.

We’ll try to resist linking it to some sweeping generalization about the practical and sensible nature of some imagined German national character, and simply say: we wholeheartedly endorse the trend of listing room descriptions like t-shirt sizes, on a spectrum from Small through X-Large and beyond, eliminating the sort of category creep t ...
The favorite hotel and meeting place for Hamburg’s advertising and fashion players is a collaborative effort; Milan designer Matteo Thun’s interiors and the spectacular lighting effects of New York installation artist Robert Wilson combine to create an environment that puts to shame many lesser design hotels.

Not as edgy as some of Hamburg’s smaller boutiques, of course, but neither is the Sofitel Hamburg Alter Wall a typical luxury hotel. This is a group that’s got a little extra time for contemporary design, and it shows here, starting with the eight-story modern waterside building, its glass-walled restaurant cantilevered over the edge ...
The gentrifying and newly hip Hamburg neighborhood of St. Georg is where the George gets its name — and you can bet there’s a sensible reason why they’ve anglicized it. Hamburg’s relationship with England goes back a long way — it’s no accident that the Beatles did their apprenticeship here — and it&rsqu ...
