Jakarta is the capital and the largest city in Indonesia. At first glance, it seems like nothing but an overcrowded concrete jungle covered in a thick layer of smog. But those who take the time to look a little further will see that it is a culturally-rich place with a vibrant nightlife. With its large immigrant population, including those from Bali, Timor and Mandur, who have come to see themselves as Indonesian, Jakarta is a large cultural melting-pot. As such, the city is home to various dialects, languages, customs and cuisines. Established in the 4th century, Jakarta is the twelfth largest city in the world and comprises of world’s second largest metropolitan area, Jabodetabek.
