Auckland is widely known as the “City of Sails” because of the hundreds of yachts scattered across its harbor. It is a city of opportunity and hope for all the recent immigrants that call Tamaki Makau Rau (the Maori name for Auckland) their home with its 1.4 million residents. As a city, Auckland has the largest population of Polynesian people in the world. Its two harbors are distinct because they each border on a different large body of water. The volcanic field on which Auckland is situated has produced 50 volcanoes in the past, but they are all now considered inactive. With a temperate climate and plenty of natural beauty, the “City of Sails” knows no boundaries when it comes to exhilaration and exuberance. Street performers and artists show vivacious talents bringing the city to life, and there are plenty of concerts and shows boasting of local and international talent.
