Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, is known as the country’s cultural center. Called “Windy Wellington” by the locals due to its windy climate, the city features a stunning harbor along with a rugged coastline. This energetic city offers a wide range of shopping boutiques, trendy cafes, art galleries, restaurants, and vineyards, as well as walking and biking trails. From cultural museums to a bustling nightlife scene, Wellington provides an eclectic mix of experiences that few other cities can offer for tourists.
Our Favorites in Wellington:
Te Papa:This national museum features collections that cover art, history, the natural environment, the Pacific, and the Māori.
Karori Wildlife Sanctuary: This sanctuary includes a unique predator-proof fence that is designed to protect the native wildlife that lives within its grounds.
The Wellington Cable Car: A Wellington icon, this is an excellent way to see the sights of the city. It is the country's last operational cable car system, and it offers reasonable prices.
Mount Victoria: From this point in the city, you can find breath taking 360 degree views. You can also look over the harbor as well as the ocean. Travel there by bus or by car, or if you are more adventurous, you can get there by walking as well.
Brooklyn Windmill: This point of interest is another great area to view the city, but is a bit further away from the city than other places with great views. Here you can experience the wind that Wellington is known for so well. A single modern-day windmill stands alone on a hill and makes for a lovely place to take photographs.
Botanic Garden: The garden is an exquisite place of beauty that is frequented by tourists and locals alike. There are many other points of interest to see and visit while on the grounds.
