Manila, which lies on the west coast of the island of Luzon, is one of the most heavily populated cities in the world. Known for its churches and historical landmarks, Manila is recognized as the major center of Christianity in the East. Manila was governed by Spain for three centuries, and the Spanish have left a lasting impression on the city in its architecture. Manila can be a disorienting place to visit as it is simply a collection of 17 districts assembled together with no real core at its center. The city was once heavily destroyed during the WWII and has never really been rebuilt. Saying this, it can be a grand sensorial experience to simply walk along the streets of the various districts of Metro Manila and to taste the satisfying flavors of the Filipino cuisine along the way. Head to Makati City, the district known as the commercial center of the Philippines, if you feel unsettled by the rest of the city and enjoy the numerous stores, restaurants and cafes which have been carefully laid out in this modern district.
Manila’s Highlights:
Fort Santiago: Situated strategically at the mouth of the Pasig River, this fort used to be the seat of the Spanish Regime, and is now a shrine to the country’s national hero, Jose Rizal.
Intramuros: It is a fortressbuilt by Miguel Lopez de Legaspi to hold off Chinese pirates as well as Dutch, English and Japanese forces. American warplanes devastated the Walled City during WWII, but much remains.
San Agustin Church and Museum: It is the oldest church in the Philippines and the only one left intact from the bombing of the Intramuros.
Ayala Museum: This impressive museum displays an excellent collection of Filipino culture and art.
