Stockholm is the capital city of Sweden and one of the most beautiful cities to visit in Europe and possibly the world. The city is spread out over 14 islands that are connected by 50 bridges, making it easy to navigate the area by foot. The sheer natural beauty that remains untouched is one of the best qualities of the islands. Stockholm features a wide range of green spaces as well as parks and waterways, making it one of cities with the freshest air in all of Europe. The city features a combination of old and new, with modern brass and steel architecture standing alongside ancient fairy tale towers.
Stockholm’s Highlights:
Kungstragarden Ice Skating Rink: This rink was modeled after the famous ice skating rink located in Rockefeller Center, New York City. This gorgeous ice skating rink is a favorite for tourists and locals alike from mid-November until early March. It features live music as well as hot and cold Swedish treats.
Absolute Ice Bar: This hotel is made completely of ice and is kept at a temperature of 23 degrees Fahrenheit to keep this structure stabilized. Everything in the building is made of ice except for the faux furs that are used to keep the barstools warm for visitors. This bar exclusively sells Absolute vodka brands and is one of many ice bars and hotels located in Stockholm.
ABBA Museum: For music buffs and ABBA fans alike, this museum takes the visitor on a linear tour of the band’s history. A very insightful and interactive display of clothing, artifacts, and instruments makes this tour a memorable one.
Vasa Museum: The outdoor exhibit of the world’s oldest restored warship, The Vasa, is a must-see attraction for all tourists. The magnificent warship has been completely restored from its wreckage on the ocean floor 333 years ago and has been on display at the museum ever since. Visitors can simply walk around the ship or go inside for a unique history lesson on sea life in 1628.
Some of you might remember another Stockholm hotel that went by the Lydmar name, a rowdy, almost painfully hip sort of place, where the focus was very much on the nightlife, and the revelers at times threatened to overwhelm the guests. Well, that was then, and this is now — around the turn of the new millennium that was what boutique hotel ...
Under no circumstances should anyone be put off by the unashamedly dated exterior of this one-time office block. The Sixties are inevitably the new Fifties, and this populist-utopian strain of Sixties modernism is only just now distant enough to be coming back into fashion.
And whether or not you’re ready to revisit that era ...
First-time visitors to Stockholm’s hotels might be surprised to find that the modernist architecture and interiors for which Scandinavia is so well known seem to be produced for export only. Here classics like the Radisson Blu Strand, a 1912 Jugendstil palace topped with an oxidized copper roof, are more the norm, at least for the bigger, ...
Widely hailed as Stockholm’s first boutique hotel, the newly rehabilitated Hotel Rival is in the heart of the hip Södermalm district and comes complete with an entertaining pop culture connection in the person of owner Benny Andersson, of ABBA fame. Some say Andersson is the reason the Rival has been such a hit with visiting pop stars ...
Since the 19th Century, Berns Salonger has been one of Stockholm’s classiest hotels, with its Belle Epoque exterior and an opulent interior to match — in fact the Red Room was the setting for August Strindberg’s novel of the same name.
The hotel has since been renovated, the exterior lovingly restored and the int ...
Named for the city’s founder, the Hotel Birger Jarl is a chic, upscale vision of Stockholm, with its kiss-me red lobby and birch-wood paneling that makes even the most jaded of interior decorators catch their breath. Every piece of furniture is custom designed by someone native, as are the staff uniforms. Downstairs, the lobby acts as a ro ...
Just to the east of Stockholm proper is the island suburb of Nacka Strand, a place where the living is truly easy, even by Swedish standards. Here, just outside the city, is where you’ll find Hotel J, a modernist seaside structure housing a boutique hotel as well as a restaurant that’s popular with overnighters and day-trippers alike ...
Long before the Swedish design trio Claesson Koivisto Rune reconfigured this 19th-century stone edifice into an eccentric modernist hotel, the site had achieved a certain notoriety; after a spell as a private residence it was home to a bank where, during a 1970s robbery, the term “Stockholm syndrome” was coined. Later it was pressed ...
The uninitiated traveler most likely imagines Stockholm’s boutique hotel scene to be a haven of modern minimalist design. Those with a finger on the Scandinavian pulse, however, would know to expect a deep vein of cozy, almost rustic tradition. When it comes to the Hotel Skeppsholmen they’d both be right.
Look at the c ...
