Lanzerac Estate is situated in the breathtaking Jonkershoek Valley just outside the trendy town of Stellenbosch. The Helderberg mountain range creates a dramatic backdrop that never fails to take your breath away. This valley is a haven of peace, tranquility, and rejuvenation. It has been regarded as a delightful haven for centuries – it’s the perfect location for a luxury escape.
Lanzerac Estate is a private working wine estate that has been in existence for more than 300 years. The undulating vineyards create the beautiful scenery that is characteristic of this part of South Africa. It is this in combination with the award-winning landscaped gardens that will no doubt capture your imagination in this estate. My first impression was of a naturally beautiful, peaceful and quiet location that is conveniently close to the shops and other attractions of Stellenbosch.
The Lanzerac Hotel is a boutique establishment, with just 48 rooms. Each of these rooms is individually decorated and features a spacious en-suite bathroom and a private patio with incredible views. Every room comes with all the modern amenities one would wish for, from under-floor heating to wireless Internet access and USB ports next to your bed. In fact, there’s an array of ports to accommodate just about any device.
I arrived at Lanzerac shortly after the commencement of the refurbishment of all the hotel rooms and suites. I was fortunate enough to stay in one of four newly refurbished rooms. Although these four rooms fall under the Classic (standard) category, there is nothing standard about them. The decor is classic and elegant.
A natural palette of stone grey, beige and white is complemented by the use of glass, mirrors, and warm wood. The decor is a tasteful blend of plush soft furnishings and genuine imported European antiques. This theme extends to the marble bathroom.
These spacious rooms have generous en-suite bathrooms. The bathroom looks onto an enclosed courtyard. This allows for a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors, all the while guaranteeing complete privacy. Once the refurbishment is complete, it would be well worth booking one of Lanzerac’s sophisticated suites for the ultimate in opulent accommodation.
On-site hotel facilities include three outdoor pools and an indoor pool. In addition to the hotel, the Lanzerac Estate also offers two incredible restaurants (The Governor’s Hall and the Terrace Restaurant), the Lanzerac Cellar, two bars (Taphuis Bar and the late night whiskey and cigar bar Esquire Lounge) and the Lanzerac Spa & Wellness Centre.
Hotel guests are treated to several complimentary experiences, such as use of the hydro facilities at the spa, a guided tour of Lanzerac’s modern cellar, and a wine tasting of four estate wines.
The Lanzerac Wine Tasting Room was recently redesigned and remodelled into a beautiful space in which guests can taste the estate’s widely-acclaimed and award-winning wines. Adjacent to this room is a delicatessen that offers the renowned fresh local artisanal produce from the region.
The Governor’s Hall is where guests are treated to breakfast. There is an extensive continental breakfast buffet, as well as an a la carte breakfast menu that covers everything from a Classic English Breakfast to a Gourmet Breakfast Burger.
But it is the venue that really caught my eye. The large elegant dining room has large wooden doors with glass panels that allow the warm morning sunshine to filter in. Guests can relax and unwind in a room of luxe fabrics, pale yellow walls, and portraits and prints in gilt frames. Not to mention the beautiful views of the manicured courtyard outside.
In addition to the facilities, the service at Lanzerac is impeccable. Yes, the people at Lanzerac are professional, efficient, prompt and courteous. But it goes beyond that. Many of the staff have worked there for many years and this is evident in their loyalty, passion, and their genuine care for the estate and its guests. It is this that creates the ambiance that makes Lanzerac a luxury estate well worth visiting.
