1901 Andaz Hotel London – Fine Dining at its Best

The first thing that strikes you as you walk into the Andaz luxury restaurant 1901 is not the delicious aromas of perfectly executed fine dining, nor the lively hum of conversation. No, these hit you later; the first thing you notice about the 1901 Andaz Hotel London is the beauty of its location.

This modern restaurant in the heart of the City of London boasts a setting as fine its food. Set in one of London’s grandest dining rooms, this was once the Grand Eastern Hotel’s ballroom. The plush furnishings sit between stately, Romanesque pillars almost identical in color to the marble floor. Every inch of this opulent décor oozes sophistication. However, it’s the ceiling that attracts the most praise, with its beautiful stained glass, domed window.

In the centre of the restaurant is the “floating” cocktail bar. Here, we happily pull up a stool to sample the inventive concoctions on offer while we wait for our table. Two of the Andaz Signature Cocktails catch our eye and we sip on a Jack’s Martini – Hendricks’ gin with elderflower cordial, cucumber and lemon – and a Cellar Door – Pimms no.1 with lemon, bergamot syrup, Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum and allspice dram – two thoroughly refreshing ways to usher in an evening.

The service is intimate and personal, with the barman serving from outside the bar. Flitting between parties and mixing drinks with a flourish, he converses good-naturedly with his guests. Both the atmosphere and the menu are so inviting we’re almost reluctant to leave when our table is ready.

The 1901 prides itself on using only the best home-grown produce. The dishes are British at their heart but with an occasional twist inspired by international tastes.

The crab steals the show on the starters menu. The delicate, creamy white flesh melts on the tongue. Follow it up with a burst of acidity from the grapefruit and the sweetness of a blackberry jelly, and you have a delightfully light entrée that’s surprisingly diverse in flavor.

Staying on the seafood theme, the sea bass main course stood out for us. Elegantly decorated and cooked to perfection, each forkful of this well thought out dish is heavenly. Those after a more meaty affair to sink their teeth into, the beef fillet with stilton beignet and courgette puree will certainly impress.

A meal that begins this well should only be finished right; the dessert menu makes this easy to accomplish. British recipes again take centre stage with Strawberries and Cream, Peach Melba and Black Forest Mousse. The latter proved a good choice. Striking the perfect balance between sweet fruit and bitter dark chocolate topped off with fluffy Chantilly cream, this dish is nothing short of divine.

The 1901 is for those who appreciate fine food but don’t have the patience for pretention. If you’re seeking refinement on the plate without the stuffy attitude, you’d be hard pressed to find a better – and more beautiful – location in the City.
