Barcelona – Architectural Jewel of Spain

Barcelona is a vibrant city filled with architectural gems and numerous other sources of beauty to ignite picture perfect weekend getaways. It was home to legends such as architect Antonio Gaudi and artist Pablo Picasso, and the spirit of creativity continues to be an inspiration in this beautiful city.

One of Gaudi’s awe-inspiring designs is

Park Guell

, an impressive public park that adds a sense of fun and color to the city. It was originally intended to serve as a series of private residences, but this project was never fully completed and ultimately became public property. This has allowed many city residents and visitors to appreciate the playful forms Gaudi created as he combined the influences of natural forms and artificial structures.

Museu Nacional d Art de Catalunya (MNAC)

houses collections of Catalan art that span many periods of history, from the Romanesque period to the mid-20th century. The exhibits cover all forms of fine art, including: sculpture, painting, objets d’art, drawing, engraving, posters, photography and coinage.

Palau de la Música Catalana (Palace of Catalan Music)

was designed by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner in the Catalan modernista style. The Barcelona City Council at the time honoured it with an award for the best building that was built in 1908. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ingenious design allows the interior of the concert hall to be lit exclusively by natural light during the day, a feature that is unique to this auditorium and not seen elsewhere in Europe. The imaginative decorative work is nothing short of majestic and a must see on your weekend getaway.

Museu Picasso (Picasso Museum)

houses more than 3500 works by the famed painter Picasso including paintings, drawings, engravings and ceramics – the most extensive collection of his works throughout the world. The museum itself consists of five adjoining medieval palaces. This impressive collection clearly illustrates the ground-breaking talent that Picasso developed over his years in Barcelona.
