Bodhi Tree at Bodhgaya

Those who have ever sat for a second in the lotus position, who have pored over Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha and who dream of seeking a glimpse of enlightenment will grasp the chance to sit beneath the famous Bodhi tree of Bodhgaya. This is said to be the spot where Prince Siddhartha rested beneath the branches and reached enlightenment, as perfect and pure as can be.

Of course, those making the journey imagining a wistful tree in a meadow beneath a blue sky will be disappointed. The times have changed and now this spot is a mecca for pilgrims of the Buddhist religion, although few follow in the words of the Prince who after sipping rice milk, sat down and declared “Here on this seat my body may shrivel up, my skin, my bones, my flesh may dissolve, but my body will not move from this seat until I have attained Enlightenment.”

You will still see a Bodhi tree, sitting peacefully in the calm and quiet of the ornate Mahabodhi Temple, planted in the same rich and fertile soil as its aged ancestor. The intricate might of the Mahabodhi Temple is a UNESCO wonder with its 10th century spectacles, its rising gilded spire and its carved images of the Buddha. Inside serenity ensues, statues of the Buddha touching the ground are said to be over a thousand years old and the diamond throne shines marking the spot where the intangible term of enlightenment was first conceived.

The heavenly Bodhi tree is often surrounded by pilgrims, all of whom have made the journey from the corners of the earth. As soon as you see the thin mandrake hands of the branches, the pale velvet leaves and watch the wind rustle you know you are in love. This humble tree that pierces the heart and speaks of a higher plain suddenly seems to be worth every footstep you took to see it in all its grace and glory.
