Circolo 45, NYC – Authentic, Classic Italian Dishes

The former Circolo restaurant in New York recently rebranded itself and in September, debuted as “Circolo45” with a redesigned look and new chef. Executive Chef and General Manager, Daniele Sicuranza, is now bringing classic Italian dishes with modern touches to the NoHo neighborhood.

The redesigned look now offers an intimate and relaxed environment with high ceilings, a long bar and a tall communal table. The walls are adorned with one-of-a-kind black ink drawings of some of the most famous Italian men and women from the 1950s and 1960s, including the famous singer, Mina, and renowned fashion designer, Valentino.

A Florence native, Executive Chef Sicuranza’s cuisine features mainly Florentine dishes that accent the most famous regions of Italy. He gives credit to his grandmother, who taught him how to cook and is the inspiration behind a number of dishes on the menu.

“The food here is the food grandma cooked in Italy,” says Nicoló Di Stefano, manager at Circolo45. “Everything is made with fine quality and simple ingredients.”

Perhaps the most rewarding part is the way the chef honors the natural ingredients. You won’t find heavy sauces or overpowering flavors in the dishes – instead, you’ll get a true taste of the high-quality, simple ingredients that will give you an appreciation for the authentic cuisine.

For an appetizer, the server recommended the 45 Octopus – grilled octopus with tomato confit and lemon juice. Tender with just a hint of lemon juice, the octopus is a delicious appetizer that serves as an introduction to the simplicity of the cuisine.

The pastas at Circolo45 are all homemade and made with locally sourced ingredients. Pictured below is the Spaghetti Alla Chitarra con Tartufo Nero Estivo – fresh egg spaghetti and black summer truffles. This dish is rich in flavor and the truffles are imported from Umbria, a region known for their black truffles.

For the main course, try the grilled halibut served with a Greek salad. Similar to the other dishes, the chef maintains the taste of the halibut by only adding a few ingredients – extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper.

As part of the redesigned look, Circolo45 has a new lounge area with a second bar downstairs that’s open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays. The restaurant also expanded its wine list to include 130 bottles of Italian and North American wines.
