The Homestead Restaurant – Organic International Cuisine

One of the key attributes of South Africa’s Western Cape Province is the world-class cuisine and award-winning wines. This is any foodie’s heaven. As a lover of high-end restaurants, I am in my element in this part of the world. And so I found my way to The Homestead Restaurant

The Homestead is situated in Kurland Hotel, in the original farmhouse on the Kurland estate. This award-winning restaurant is something that needs to be experienced by anyone travelling to this part of the world.

Before dinner, we sank into large comfy couches in an elegant lounge, enjoying a drink and snacks next to a crackling fireplace. I couldn’t help but sink into the cosy ambiance and relax in the peaceful atmosphere of the farmhouse. There was an amazing warm, homely ambiance that immediately put us at ease and made us feel snug and warm in the cooler weather.

It was here that we were able to peruse the menu and wine list at our leisure, and then sink back into the upholstery until our starters were ready. It must be said that The Homestead has a comprehensive wine list that focuses on premier local wines to complement the incredible menu. The staff are incredibly professional and offer helpful suggestions with regards to wine pairings.

Diners have the option of choosing between several beautiful settings on the estate. You can choose to enjoy your meal in the library, on the verandah, next to the pool, in the courtyard, on your own private terrace, in the famous rose garden, or even in the bustling kitchen itself.

We chose a table in the luxurious dining room that is all about old world glamour. The dark wood chairs are upholstered in velvet and the light from crystal chandeliers dances over the large gilt framed mirrors and the bowls of fresh roses that adorn all the tables. It’s a romantic candlelit venue, complete with an antique wardrobe and sideboard, silver cutlery and silver candlesticks. Here too there was a large fireplace crackling on one side, adding warmth and light to the room.

The emphasis is on fresh local produce, which is clearly illustrated in the restaurant’s organic herb and vegetable garden. The menu changes regularly, always promising diners dishes of the highest standards. And so it was with high expectations that I awaited our meal.

A selection of freshly baked breads was brought to our table, quickly followed by our first course. I opted for the organic tomato and basil soup with thyme roasted croutons, which was the perfect combination of comfort and flavour in the chilly evening. This was followed by a mild prawn curry with steamed basmati rice, wok fried vegetables and a tom yum sauce. Here the chef truly showed his knowledge of flavours and textures.

Predictably, I ordered the chocolate fondant. It was served with Amarula ice-cream and a crispy tuille. It was the perfect end to a magnificent meal.
