KaDeWe Berlin: Luxurious Retail Experience

Luxurious, innovative, chic — KaDeWe Berlin offers shoppers a retail experience to rival Harrods or Paris’ Galeries Lafayette. With eight floors and over 60,000 square meters, this exclusive shopping mall houses an expansive range of premium retail stores, from luxury fashion brands and high-range beauty products to gourmet food and homeware. There’s little doubt that KaDeWe Berlin is one of the top things to do for keen shoppers in the German capital.

Housed in an imposing building designed by architect Emil Schaudt, KaDeWe dates back over 100 years. The building was destroyed during WW2 but, following a rapid rebuild after the war, it reopened in 1950 to become a symbol of new beginnings for many Berliners.

Today, up to 180,000 customers flock through the historic iron gates each day. Following in the well-heeled footsteps of international stars such as Claudia Schiffer, Diane Kruger and Marlene Dietrich, I went to check out Berlin’s most luxurious shopping experience for myself.

Luxury Boutiques

The sleek design of KaDeWe’s ground floor creates the perfect environment for the world’s most exclusive brands. Against a backdrop of polished gold and cream tiles, the highly coveted products sparkle under the lights, beckoning you in to take a closer look.

Among the 4,000 square meters dedicated to luxury living, you’ll find the boutiques of world-famous designers, renowned jewelers and products tailor-made for the discerning consumer. After perusing the collection of gleaming rings, watches and necklaces at Bulgari, Rolex and Tiffany & Co, I took my credit card for a stroll through the fashion heavyweights of Gucci, Prada, Burberry, Chanel, Fendi, Dior and Louis Vuitton.

Top Fashion Brands

For those who’d like to spend their vacation budget on sightseeing, rather than designer threads, KaDeWe offers a range of high-street fashion stores. These extend over three floors of the Mall, encompassing 20,000 square meters, and offer the opportunity for some serious retail therapy without breaking the bank.

From Esprit to DKNY to All Saints, women can pick up the hottest new trends as soon as they hit Berlin or that timeless classic to complete their wardrobe. Men aren’t forgotten either; whatever your style – business, sporty or causal – with the first floor dedicated to men’s fashion, you’re sure to find the right piece to complete your look.

Beauty Products

The vast KaDeWe beauty department spreads across 3,000 square meters and showcases both the top international brands as well as specialist products. Whether you’re after the perfect shade of lipstick at Armani Cosmetics, looking to resist the march of time with skincare from Dr. Hauschka Cosmetics or seeking a fine fragrance at Profumi del Forte, the attentive staff at each counter are dedicated to helping you find just what you’re looking for.

The service doesn’t stop at expert recommendations, however, KaDeWe Berlin also offers specialist beauty lounges at Estée Lauder, La Mer, La Prairie, Kanebo, Dr. Hauschka and Shiseido. These havens of rest and relaxation provide customers with professional pampering and a little respite during a busy day’s shopping. I took a break from pounding the mall’s well-polished floors to indulge in a Shiatsu hand and arm massage – the perfect way to restore tired arms after carrying bulging shopping bags.

Home Décor

If you’re hoping to add a touch of luxury to your home, don’t miss KaDeWe’s immense selection of high-end products for the home, from tablewear and china to plush soft furnishings and eye-catching design pieces. Even if, like myself, you’re not looking to redecorate, the home department at KaDeWe Berlin is worth a look. Every two months this section is redecorated by interior design professionals to reflect the latest trends in home style and is always an impressive display.

Tech-junkies will feel well catered for with stores from all the big names in technology. After browsing the Apple, Leica and Samsung stores, I wandered in the Hugendubel Book World where a “quick five minutes” look became an hour happily browsing through one of the best book collections in Germany.

Gourmet Food

Shopping is hard work and, in my opinion, a thoroughly enjoyable way to build up an appetite. Fortunately at KaDeWe, the luxury experience extends to the restaurants. On the top floor, high above most other Berlin rooftops, over 30 gourmet stalls and a large oyster bar transform the KaDeWe food hall into a Mecca for foodies. Here, food and wine connoisseurs will be in their element, perusing over 35,000 different products, including 3,400 wines and over 1,300 cheeses.
