Kurland Hotel: Idyllic Countryside Escape

When travelling through the iconic Garden Route of South Africa, it is difficult not to linger in the picturesque area surrounding Plettenberg Bay. It is not only the sheer undiluted beauty of the region, but also the superb five-star hotels, restaurants and spas in the area that entice you to extend your stay. And that’s exactly what I did, by booking into Kurland Hotel.

Kurland Hotel South Africa 1

Kurland Hotel is an award-winning five-star hotel, which is located near Plettenberg Bay (despite what Google maps will tell you). As I approached the 700 hectare estate what struck me most was the incredible tranquillity of the property. It has the ideal combination of idyllic countryside charm with all the modern luxuries one needs for an opulent stay.

Kurland Hotel is a luxury boutique establishment with just 12 suites. At this exclusive address you are guaranteed privacy and relaxation throughout your stay. I checked into Paddock 2, which is known as a luxury external loft. This suite has a large open plan bedroom and lounge, a generous bathroom that oozes opulence and glamour, a private courtyard and a verandah.

I arrived on a cold day, and it was the perfect place to sit next to a fire and hibernate. Even though the accommodation has all the modern conveniences such as flat screen televisions and WiFi, all I was interested in was turning on the underfloor heating and snuggling next to the beckoning flames.

The decor and ambiance at Kurland is the classic elegance that you would associate with a luxury country estate. The use of genuine antiques and plush fabrics creates a decidedly sophisticated environment, as do the stylish artworks and objets d’art. Kurland is all about indulgent relaxation in the height of opulent luxury.

The next morning the weather was still quite chilly, so I was glad to have the warmth of a roaring fire in the opulent dining room. There was a beautifully presented continental buffet as well as a lovely hot breakfast menu. Here, as throughout our stay, everything was professional, efficient and organised. The service has the warmth and friendliness that you come to expect from South Africans, all the while being most attentive and helpful.

Kurland is the ideal luxury escape. It’s lavish and offers everything for all types of travellers. And everywhere, everywhere you go on the estate are the magnificent Kurland roses releasing their delicate scent into the air.
