Phuket – Top 5 Things To Do

Phuket is a well-known travel destination for all kinds of holidays, from those excited by adventure travel to those used to indulging in luxury escapes. This piece of Thailand truly has something to offer everyone. After a busy time in the bustling city of Bangkok, I found my days in Phuket to be a welcome reprieve.

Wat Chalong

Phuket is home to no less than 29 Buddhist temples, known as wats. Wat Chalong is over a century old. Here, you can learn about Buddhism as you observe the locals coming to pray. It is worth visiting the many halls which house some beautiful statues. Make sure you take the time to examine the wall paintings on the Grand Pagoda.

Phuket Viewpoints

The beauty of this part of the world can truly be appreciated from any of several viewpoints around the island. The convenience of staying on a small island means that you only have to travel a matter of minutes to find the ideal viewpoint for a sunset, sunrise, or panoramic views of beaches, the sea and islands, Old Phuket Town, or lush tropical vegetation. Some of the more popular viewpoints include: Promthep Cape, Radar Hill, Rang Hill, Kata, and Panwa.

Patong Beach

I was advised to stay at Patong Beach, probably the most famous and popular beach resort on the island. It has a 3km uninterrupted stretch of beach where visitors can relax, sunbathe, or participate in a range of water sports. Needless to say, this area is the shopping centre of Phuket. For those looking for entertaining night life, you need look no further than Patong’s Bangla Road. Soi Bangla is lively every night of the year. Be warned: you might need a sense of humor to cope with the raunchy, loud, yet unthreatening atmosphere.

Simon Cabaret Show

The Simon Cabaret show entertains a thousand visitors every evening. Each show runs the entire gamut of musical theatre, encompassing cultures from all around the world. It has just the extravagant costumes, make up and sets that you would expect from a famous transvestite cabaret show. This is a night of guaranteed flamboyant fun.

Phi Phi Islands

Possibly my favorite spot in the East, I don’t think you can over-exaggerate the beauty of the Phi Phi Islands. It’s easy to arrange a day trip (or longer) from Phuket by boat. If you want to experience idyllic island scenes, crystal clear water, and a laid-back island lifestyle, then this is the place to go. It’s no wonder that this destination has been picked by Hollywood to be the backdrop for some of its blockbuster movies.
