Although most things to do in Mauritius revolve around the idyllic beaches, I would nevertheless recommend spending a day exploring the island’s capital, Port Louis. It is located on the North West coast and is easily accessible no matter where you are staying in Mauritius. In fact, hiring a taxi to take you there for the day can be a great way to see more of the island and experience local color and flavor along the way.
Caudan Waterfront
The Caudan Waterfront is the place to visit for high end shopping. Here you can find luxury brands and sophisticated merchandise to suit every taste. This is also where you need to be to experience fine dining and the best night life in Mauritius.

Central Market
This famous bazaar was the center of the local economy from the Victorian era. It is here that you can truly experience local life. There are authentic local stalls where you can buy fruits, vegetables and Chinese herbal medicines as well as many stalls selling lovely souvenirs. The colors, smells, and sounds will entice you as you wind your way through the closely packed stalls and interact with the friendly hawkers, who will test your bargaining skills in good-natured banter.

Domaine les Pailles
Located just a few minutes away from Port Louis in the Pailles Valley is Domaine les Pailles. Here you can take a step back in time to the era of old-fashioned Mauritian sugar estates. In addition to learning about the production of sugar and essential oils, you can also taste some local rum and enjoy a live Sega show.

Signal Mountain
Although you have to walk to reach the peak of Signal Mountain, it’s an easy journey and well worth it in the end. There is a paved path all the way to the top, making it an easily accessible mountain top. From here, at 323 meters above sea level, you can savor uninterrupted views of Port Louis and the western coastline.
