Pyramid of the Moon: Teotihuacan

Flying over Mexico City, on your way to see the pyramid of the moon, you are certainly awe struck by how far the low lying buildings spread and once you touch down the chaos enters your soul. After spending days in the city feeling as though you are going to fall over from the altitude, sipping frosted Margaritas and getting your hands sticky with the wealth of incredible street food you may be ready for time out in Teotihuacan. Mexico is littered with ancient ruins, many of which tell a bloody story, yet this one close to the capital is sure to fill you with spiritual awe.

Nestled in the vast arid plains, with the mountains hazy on the backdrop and the sun broiling in a deep set blue sky you can glimpse the two famous pyramids that make this spot so famous. The Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon seem carved straight from an Aztec dream, equally imposing and impressive in their splendor. Even more arresting about this first century site is the enigma it is wrapped in; no one really knows who built it, why the city suddenly collapsed in the 7th century and what happened atop the stone steps in terms of sacrifice. This is Mexico’s own mystery, something cloaked in the dark days of history but something truly intriguing nonetheless.

Dusty paths take you towards the Pyramid of the Sun before following the track littered with ruins rising on each side down to the Pyramid of the Moon. The latter Pyramid is seemingly easier to conquer; the steps are steep but the views from the top stretch on for miles showcasing the oddity of this sacred spot against the flush of the modern world. Hawkers sell growling panther dolls for the children to take back home, a sound that echoes menacingly through the dusty sunburnt streets. Shade is hard to seek and the desolation seems to make the sun seem hotter still. For mysticism and atmosphere, the ancient temples of Teotihuacan can truly rival the greatest wonders of the ancient world.
