Saba Island: Mighty Peaks and Waterfalls

Glancing out of the window of your jet you will be greeted with your first vision of the mighty Queen known as Saba. Her mighty power rises out of the depths of the ocean, partially shrouded beneath the mist, blazing green in all her finery.

Saba Island may be the smallest in the collection of the Netherlands Antilles, but she certainly makes nothing less of a grandiose impression. Rainforests cloak every visible side of the cliff, trails cut through climbing precariously to the peak and below on the beaches there is as much warm water and soft sand as you could ever wish for.

This is the place to plunge headfirst into island life and it is easy not to be roused from that dream for the duration of your stay. The island is free from overpopulation, endless resorts and gaudy franchises opting instead for the unique appeal of pure simplicity beneath the sweltering sun.

The sand shimmers black and the healthy reefs thrive and grow with an abundance of life making it the perfect place for those who adore diving and swimming alongside turtles in the bay. In the cool mist of the mornings, you can climb the endless steps to reach the tip of the kingdom and gaze out for miles across the expanse of the ocean.

Wandering around the quaint little clusters of homes you will see gingerbread style houses with manicured gardens flourishing under the splash of flowers, the local women sit in the shade weaving table cloths and other keepsake pieces perfect for taking home. Eclectic little bars serve frosted beer bottles and fishermen haul in their catch ready to be spiced and served up with a kick of flavor to tantalize the senses.

Cottages and cozy hotels offer a delightful home away from home amidst the flurry of green and blue. You can spend hours lingering beside the pool, being charmed by the gentle proprietors or arranging boat trips to take you out discovering the rugged coastline offering views back onto the island like something from a lost kingdom.
