Stand on the Meteora in Greece

The land of the gods, of Homer and the soft siren songs, of the oracle sat deep in the mountains, of the burning legend of Troy and of blind Oedipus stumbling through the groves – Greece never fails to abound with wonders and when you see the Meteora in Greece, all those myths start to seep from dreams to reality. Perched precariously at the top of the massive soaring pillars of rock you will find the six monasteries shrouded in mist and seemingly impossible to reach.

The hiking paths that dare to breach the rocky pinnacles take you to unimaginable heights, where on clear days you can see the expanse of shimmering mountains, rolling olive groves and pastured patchwork farmland stretching out for miles. On damp days the magic doesn’t fade as you push through silver wisps of cloud and breathe in the deep scent of earth and trodden leaves. Hermit monks from the 14th century are responsible for these mountainous hideaway havens, many of which would gain access through leaps of faith, being pulled up in nets and making a gut wrenching climb on straggly ladders to reach their home. Nowadays the tracks require a little less in the way of nerves of steel but tiptoeing to the edge at the top still requires a deep breath first.

The monasteries are orthodox and it isn’t rare to see the monks dressed in their midnight black gowns lacing in the slants of sunlight or shuffling around the monasteries. Inside hauntingly beautiful orthodox images adorn the walls and ceiling and prayer candles flicker. At the foot of these sheer sky soaring rocks you can find a handful of restaurants, often with tables plonked in the sun offering inspiring views of the Meteora’s over a glass of sweet honeyed wine. You can pick at the olives and graze on grilled feta, lingering in the hearty light before tackling the climb or on your way back down.
