Tetiaroa Island, Tahiti: Kings and Cocktails

Seeking a beach break with royal splendor is all too simple when you head for the South Pacific jewel of Tetiaroa Island. This dazzling island of sheer blue was once cut off from public sight and hailed as the playground for Tahitian kings. Yet ever since Marlon Brando glimpsed out the window of his private jet and spotted the glowing gem of gold and green he has made Tetiaroa his own exclusive resort for the rich and famous. The Godfather then went on to rename the island as The Brando and set about nurturing the land so it bloomed with grace, beauty and the undeniable sweet fragrance of French Polynesia. The island never lost its regal touch and despite its draw it boats an eco-friendly appeal so you don’t need to worry about leaving a footprint in the sand.

A smattering of thatched bungalows with lush gardens and private lagoons sets the scene for what can only be sheer relaxation, meditation and wonder. The reefs flourish with painted parrot fish, somber turtles swim in the gin colored waters and bird song punctuates the silence of morning welcoming you to rouse from the pillowy white bed of your private abode. What better way to spend the day in this pristine paradise then embracing the art of slow exploration. Take a bicycle along the wooden boardwalks that stretch across the shore and duck into the dense towering flora that fills the air with brightness. Paddle board across the translucent waters or take a kayak out into the depths of the blue with a hope of spotting a crashing tale of a whale.

This is the perfect environment for discovering the elegance of pure Polynesian culture. Sit cross-legged in a patch of golden sun and practice the ukulele, let the locals teach you how to perfect the art of Polynesian flavors from fish caught straight from Mermaids Bay or simply sit back with a tongue tingling cocktail in hand and watch the locals dance beneath a flurry of white stars.
