The Aviator – An Exclusive Look at Nico Santucci’s New Luxe Yacht

If Howard Hughes were alive today, he’d probably own a yacht like The Aviator.

Sprinkled with plush carpets, fur throws and art deco furnishings, Aviator evokes the opulence and luxury of the 1940s, much like Howard Hughes did himself. As you fix yourself a Martini at the onboard bar, it’s easy to imagine the dashing young billionaire during his Hollywood days entertaining well-heeled guests and throwing lavish parties.

This is exactly the ambiance Nico Santucci, owner and designer of Aviator, aspired to: “I wanted passengers to feel like Mr. Hughes left this ‘opulence of the ocean’ untouched on his estate.”

The Aviator didn’t start life quite so lavishly. Built to serve in World War II, the vessel packs a surprising speed and agility while retaining an effortless poise. “She feels sexy yet certain, detailed yet prepared and without concern for ever reaching land,” remarks Nico, “She’s well equipped, even for the likes of Howard Hughes himself.”

When Nico came across the 1944 warship in Newport Beach, he couldn’t take his eyes off it. Although abandoned and deteriorating, the ship’s beauty endured and its exquisite silhouette and its sense of slumbering power captivated him.

He dreamed of restoring the ship to its full glory. It’s no small feat to bring a fading star back to life but Nico, a self-made and highly successful businessman, isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. The next day, he bought the ship.

Following the full restoration of the ship’s exterior, Nico applied his aptitude for luxurious aesthetics to remodeling Aviator’s interior. Previously, he has redesigned some of America’s most luxurious mansions and nightclubs, including Penthouse 28, Red Rock Mansion and the 14,500-square-foot Parisian Palace, an opulent 21-room mansion complete with private club and bowling alley.
