SeaFood at The Plettenberg celebrates its site at the seaside. The emphasis is on fresh local seafood and other seasonal produce from the area. The menu is created in accordance with the seasons and there is, throughout, a sense of the food being sustainably connected to this specific region of South Africa.

Relais & Chateaux Grand Chef Peter Tempelhoff has created magnificent signature dishes that incorporate both the ingredients and flavours of the Plettenberg Bay area. In addition to the seafood dishes, there are also what are known as the Collection Signature Dishes – mouth-watering dishes that appear on all the menus across the establishments in the Liz McGrath Collection.

I started my meal with a Garden Route Salad, which was a beautifully balanced combination of fresh, flavourful ingredients. This was followed by Seafood Linguini. The incredibly fresh seafood was wonderfully prepared so that the flavours took centre stage. Simply delicious! I also sampled the Slow Roast Crispy Duck – the crisp duck won ton with soy and honey sauce was out of this world. I cannot resist chocolate fondant, so it was no surprise that that’s what I ordered next. What arrived was a dark chocolate and toffee fondant with lavender ice-cream, pistachio crumble and strawberries. This innovative take on a classic dessert was heaven on a plate.

The ambiance is contemporary yet relaxed, reflecting the restaurant’s location. The colours and decor echo the exquisite views of Formosa Bay. Here they have taken the beach theme, which is usually very casual, and given it an upmarket slant so that the overall effect is elegant and sophisticated. The interior is primarily white with subtle lighting and large glass doors opening out onto a terrace. Colour is introduced by several large floor to ceiling photographs of marine life in bright blue hues.
